Final Fantasy X Writer Reveals the Dragon Quest Secret That Shaped a Generation of JRPGs!

Hold onto your chocobos, anime and JRPG fans, because we just got a legendary peek behind the creative curtain! In what's becoming an awesome "mutual love fest" between industry titans, Kazushige Nojima, the celebrated scenario writer for the iconic Final Fantasy X, has revealed his deep-seated design philosophy comes straight from the halls of the genre's other king: Dragon Quest!
In a fascinating insight, Nojima shared, “I grew up playing Dragon Quest, so I was raised believing main characters shouldn't speak, & were a vessel for players.” This is an absolutely incredible statement when you think about it! The core concept of the silent protagonist, which defined Dragon Quest and so many other classic RPGs, was the foundational belief for the man who would eventually give us the very, VERY talkative Tidus. It shows just how profoundly the design of one legendary series can influence another, even when the final product goes in a completely different direction!
This ongoing exchange of respect between the creators of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest is exactly what we love to see. It’s a powerful reminder that these incredible worlds we pour hundreds of hours into are built on a shared passion and history. While Nojima may have eventually broken the mold he was raised on, understanding his creative roots gives us a whole new appreciation for the character arcs and stories he's given us. It’s a piece of JRPG history that connects two of the greatest series of all time!
